Medicare Advantage Plans/Medicare Part C
- Run by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
- Ensures coverage for Medicare Parts A and B, although costs for specific services may differ.
- May include extra benefits like incorporated Part D coverage, dental, vision/hearing benefits, and gym memberships, etc.
- Offered as HMO, PPO, and PFFS plans. Many HMOs have simplified the process by removing the requirement for a referral from a primary doctor to see a specialist.
- Doctors can choose whether or not to accept the plan.
- Expect potential changes to plans on an annual basis.
Medicare Supplement/ Medigap
- Provided by private insurance carriers to help cover eligible costs uninsured by traditional Medicare.
- Medicare usually handles 80% of your costs, and supplements take care of the remaining 20%.
- Go to any doctor that accepts Medicare patients, no referrals needed.
- To qualify for a Medigap plan, it's necessary to be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B.
- You're eligible to get a supplement plan during the first six months of having Parts A and B, regardless of any pre-existing health conditions.
- Be aware that the cost of supplement plans can increase over time.
Prescription Drug Plans/Medicare Part D
- If you're eligible for Medicare Part A or already enrolled in Part B, you have the opportunity to join a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
- This can be supplementary to your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage as a stand-alone plan, or integrated into a Part C Medicare Advantage managed care plan, encompassing hospital, medical, and prescription drug insurance.
- This can be an advantageous option for those who require expensive medications, as it may help manage and potentially reduce your out-of-pocket prescription drug costs.
